I know we all have seen this look before: hair that is dyed or has highlights only on the top half.  Why do people choose this look?  And why do salons even offer it?  They really should offer services that make the clients look good.

two-tone hair

I captured this during a spiritual talk with Alanis Morissette in Scottsdale, AZ at the Celebrate Your Life Conference.

One of our Polished by tu-anh hair artists, Ryann Doyle, has many years of salon experience and says that salons offer partial color on the outside because it is less expensive for those who can not afford the full coloring.  I say, if you can’t afford it, don’t do it.  At the very least, if you do end up with the partial highlights or color-block look, think twice before pulling your hair up in public.  If she had put her hair back in a low chignon or a loose braid it would have looked better.

In my opinion, if you are going to go for two-toned or partial colored hair, then you have to go all out, like Daphne Guinness does in the striking photo below.  Now that looks polished!

Absolutely gorgeous and sophisticated, but please do not try this at home!
